I have a 1940 Allis B serial# B44223 and engine# BE 44949 G. When I bought the tractor, it didn't have a generator, starter, battery box, instrument panel box, lights or toolbox. The torque tube has a casted hole for a starter. The flywheel does not have the ring gear on it also. The throttle assembly was mounted mid way up the steering column support tube. The gas tank as listed in the parts manual, is for tractors prior to B101. So when I bought a toolbox for an electric start B, there is a nice size gap between the tank and toolbox. Looking at my brothers '49 B the toolbox fits nicely under the tank, no gap. I know that the 1940 was a transition year but in order to restore this relic I need to fit proper componets without the "BUY AND TRY" approach. Maybe this was set up as hand start with the option to go electric???? (It had the radiator shutters too) Any ideas on what this tractor might have looked like new would help out a lot.

Head-- i think you got no replys because you have us stumped. I have a 52 and a 40 B and did not know the tool box was different as you say. Maybe you just got an odd ball. I am afraid you got it right when you said it is a trial and error type thing. Might have to get a tool box or battery box and modify it slightly to fit. Not sure you have an option to order "different versions.----Also my 40 B has a starter, but the generator was definitly an add on. bracket bolted "aftermarket", no casting lugs on the side on the motor block. My torque tube housing with starter hole also has 2 horizontal bolt holes for mounting lift brackets, etc on the belly of tractor. I just assumed it was non starter model to start with and the newer torque tube was added sometime in the last 50 years. I do know a guy that had a 40 with starter and no generator. he claims it was that way from factory. dont know how they got the battery charged? park it in the barn and put on a charger? in 1940, i dont think so, not on any farm i ever saw.

My engine does have generator bosses cast into it. The torque tube is set up to mount a battery box. According to the man I purchased the tractor from, nothing has been altered. He said it has always been hand start. The valve cover is the 2bolt type. It has the water manifold(thermostat housing)PN 210107. My question would be.....If I am restoring this to original condition, should it be hand or electric? If it was to be judged, would it matter?

i see your delema. im not sure you can ever know for sure. i never saw a B or C that had a generator mount, starter hole in the housing, battery box, but was not equiped with a starter. They started adding that stuff in 1940. It might have been ordered without starter and still had the other stuff, but that sounds odd. I dont think any one would ever down grade you as they could not be sure if it was ordered with a starter or not. ONe thing for sure is, most guys would rather have the starter jusst for convenience. helps when you go to sell it also.

Being the kind of guy that pays attention to the finest detail, this is killing me not knowing which way to go.

The 1940 can be a mix. I have one that has a full electric system and 1/2 (rt side) hydraulics. I believe it to be all original (except for a water pump replacement) as it supposedly sat in a barn until repainted by owner #2.
I rarely see B of this vintage decked out like mine is. If there is anything I can help with, please write...
