What is a good one worth ? I have one that I have just taken the complete power unit from a Gleaner E combine, the engine only has a couple of hundred hours on it since an overhaul. Runs fine, no smoke, knocks, or ticks. My local AGCO dealer is wanting to buy it, but I don`t really know what it is worth, any, and all opinions are welcome. Thanks, John

I bought one a couple of weeks ago, the whole combine, for $125.00. Engine is now in my D17, with 320 something parts...new front and rear seals, new throwout bearing, pilot bearing, intake and exhaust gaskets, pan and valve cover gaskets, and brake shoes and springs. What are they wanting to give you for yours?

He has not made an offer yet, just wanted to know what I wanted for the unit, at least there is no combine to dispose of, and the work is done. I offered to trade it to him for a 2 car carport, which he sells also. I have had a few people contact me about this, saying it is worth in the $400.00 to $750.00 range, so I guess that I will see what happens. In the worst case, I will look for a WD to put the engine in, and then sell the WD.

Had to chuckle when I saw the picture. Looks like what I've just went thru. Someone told me the combine engine was somewhat more powerful than the tractor....do you happen to know if this is true? My conversion was sucessful and it sure runs nice, but quite a bit of work, when it was all said and done. I've got the engine out of the D17...good head and pistons and liners, etc. I'm gonna put it all back together and hopefully I'll stumble into a block or another combine and someday put it into another tractor.

I did some checking - Gleaner E motor was based on D17 (G226), not WD45 (W226). Same 226 ci displacement, but higher compression (7.2 nominal vs 6.5 at Sea level and 8.0 high altitude) and rated at higher RPM (1650 vs 1400 - NOTE: the 170/175 gas were same but even higher 1800 RPM - they tried to go to 2000 in the 180, but Swinford's AC Farm Equipment 1914-1985 says they had vibration problems at 2000 rpm). D17 Gas (7.2:1) was rated at 52.7 belt and 48.64 drawbar HP - Gleaner E should be similar though some of the later G226 got over 60 Brake HP as I recall.

More info - W226 got 60 brake HP (this was in WD45 trim) and G226 (at 1800 RPM in D17 or 170 trim?) got 11% more at 67 brake HP, again according to Swinford's book p195, see also p201. Note Brake HP is not same as tractors quoted in Belt or Drawbar HP.
