WD45 with WD motor

I have a 1954 WD45 s/n WD166913 with what appears to be a WD motor (circa 1951?) s/n WD306959PA. Motor knocks under load, so I am going to need to either work on motor or replace it. Several questions - what is most likely cause of knock and to what extent would I have to tear down to fix? and Is it possible that previous owner replaced block but put innerds (crank and pistons) from WD45 into a WD block? If so, could this be the problem? Are there any good sources for used WD45 motor or block & crank if I wanted to put it right?

Serial no. WD166913 is a WD not a WD45. WD in front of the engine no. also means it is a WD not a 45. WD45 parts will go in to the WD block, without a problem.

Accordingto the research and info section on this site [ if I am reading it right} in 1953 the first serial number for WD was 131273 the first serial number fo WD45 that same year was 146607 and the first serial for WD45 in 1954 listed is 160389 and the first serial number for WD45 in 1955 is 190993. As I said, if I am reading it right, the tractor would be a WD45 made in 1954.

Agree its a 1954 WD45 "chassis", but 226 ci motor for WD45 should start with 45- and should be somewhere around 24000 for serial number to match the chassis. The WD-306959 PA would make it a late 1951 WD 201 ci motor with the higher compression (PA) configuration as motor came from factory.

Very doubtful that you have a combination of WD and WD 45 parts. My dad owned one of each and my memory is that the 45 had a signicantly larger bore than the WD, that's what gave it more power.

By the same token the pistons could not fit in a WD block. I don't think it would be possible to overbore that much. In addition the 45 may have had a longer strong which would mean the crank/rods would not interchange either.

One good thing about old tractors, they're pretty simple anb if you're handy at all you should be able to tear it down yourself and find out what's going on. Not saying it will be easy, but not like trying to tear into a modern car or truck engine.

WD45 pistons will very easily go into a WD block. They both had a 4" bore. The STROKE on the 45's was 1/2" longer, but the crank easily swings in a WD45 block. Just did it to my WD, and my dad has one the same way. If memory serves, the rod shave the same part number, they just changed the piston pin hight. I think once the 45 crank came out, a lot of WD's got them put in at their first OH.

Thanks for info - Looks like 1st thing is to drop the pan and see what is going on - is there any easy way to distinguish 45 from WD crank short of trying an awkward measurement with nothing to compare to?

If I had a parts book, I could try to get a part number for you to look for. Akward measurement is about the best. Would be 2" from crank to piston on a WD, 2 1/4" on a 45.

A knock under load might just be ignition timing. However it could also be a bad bearing somewhere or any number of things. Tear down is rather simple, removal of engine is simple. Not much chance that putting in WD45 parts caused the knock. Lots os sources for engine and parts.

On down this page I had asked what a 226 was worth, I still have the engine, the AGCO dealer has not spoke for it yet, he has had his chance. It is located in Winchester Indiana, and can hear it run.

Several points - do you have the serial number off left side behind carb and does it start with 45- or 17- or what? As to value - I just bought an Oliver 40 Combine (Continental F244) motor for $200 and a MH H277B power unit for $100. The F244 runs, the H277 needs a freeze plug but supposedly runs. My inclination would be a little below the $400 range that was discussed on other post particularly with distance involved. But still may be interested - Do you have any ideas on transport to southeast Louisiana - e-mail me off line so we don't bog down the forum.
