How can one tell if a camshaft needs regrinding or not? Thanks.

If the surface where the lifter contacts is scored severly, then it will need reground or replaced. it may polish out if not too bad. will need to put it in a lathe to do so. use extremely fine emery cloth with a little wd-40 while the lathe turns it. you can also at this time check for lobe wear by using a dial indicator. set it up for zero on the back side of the lobe. then rotate around to the lobe and check the dial for lift. write it down on paper and do the same for the rest. then look up the specs in the engine manual. good luck!
