I have a 28 inch Allis G rear axle. Can it be shortened to match the other 20 inch axle which I have? Is it OK to shorten and re-weld an axle? Thanks, AWB

there are specialty welding rods that can weld leaf spring, axles and other hardened metal. the bigger problem is how do you plan to align the two parts and keep them straight while you weld it back together. .010 inch out of line is a lot for bearings. It can be done, but look for someone that has done it a few times.

I have decided that trying to weld an axle is not practical, and am concerned about some possible safety issues. Since the original post I have been fortunate to find a good used axle. Thanks , AWB.
