Hey all, I am not to familiar with AC and need a little help. Have the opportunity to buy a WD45 diesel cheap and would like to restore it. I have never seen a diesel sell before. Are they rare? What make of motor? It does not run, but the motor is loose. How much is a diesel worth compared to gasoline? Any help on this is greatly appriciated! I am really in the dark when it comes to Allis tractors.

I grew up on them...they are a nice smooth running engine when they are running. When they aren't, they can be a big drain on your wallet as the parts are getting expensive. It is a Buda engine (bought-out by AC before they put them in the tractor). The heads are prone to cracking if the engines are shut-down without cooling down first. The problem is you can't tell what is wrong until you pull it apart. Check to see if the valve cover has been off lately, or if the coolant/radiator is black - a sure sign of a bad head. In my book non-running tractors aren't worth much, too many things can be wrong with it that you can't check out.

In 1971, I was a high school kid employed by a local dairy farmer who had absolutely no mechanical ability. One day he told me to pull the head off his WD 45 diesel because of an external coolant leak. After removing the head, I discovered cracks in virtually every combustion chamber although at that point none were leaking coolant. I advised the farmer that he needed a new head and head gasket set. He handed me a grimy old bottle of Indian Head gasket cement, told me to paint the old gaskets and put it back together. I protested but he was insistent. To my suprise, after re assembly, no leaks, ran fine...and to the best my knowledge is still running today. Strange things happen....

I have a WD45 diesel that is in pieces in my garage. Parts for the motor ARE hard to come by but not impossible. The one that I have has the motor apart. The head is bad which will cost me around anywhere from 600 to 900 for a rebuild one. The problem with the heads as I was told was that the cast area around the power cell cracked sometimes from overheating and then coolant can leak down from the head into each cylinder. Mine has cracks by every power cell. Blocks also cracked which wasn't a major deal because the cylinders were sleeved but mine had a crack through the head bolt hole and in the web between the cylinders so that piece is now loose once the sleeves were all pulled out. Basically my whole motor is going to need a new block, new head etc. so if it weren't that this was one of the tractors I grew up on, I would have parts it out a long time ago. I will probably have $2000-$2500 in my engine easily by the time I am done and I am doing most of the engine work myself. A complete rebuild kit for the engine including pistons, sleeves, rod bearings, main bearings and gasket set will cost about $1200 if it needs just that done. If you buy the tractor, good luck with it and let me know if you need parts etc. cause I found a new block already so I will have a spare crank, connecting rods etc. If you don't buy it, what are they asking for it and where is it cause maybe it might be worth my time for the parts aspect to pick it up. I live in southeastern Wisconsin, so let me know what you do regardless. I am no expert by any means but I have learned alot about this tractor from tearing mine apart and talking to people who do know.
