OEM Carb on a C

How many different brands and models of carbs were used on the C when it left the factory?
Looking at the replacements on the seller site associated with YTMag, I find Zenith and Marvel-Shebler brands, which replace 13 different numbers, none of which match the Zeniths listed in the I&T manual. Another seller lists 5 more numbers that its carb replaces.
How is one to select a carb when one has no carb on a '48 C?

Poke,
We do quite a bit of carb rebuilding for our AC customers, and on the B/C/CA/& RC models it seems that the Zenith is most popular. As I rebuild them, I record what model machine they're off of and what customer just for our own records. The most popular carb seems to be the Zenith 212844 & the 845. There are a few different numbers in between, and an occasional M/S carb that we've done so far for folks on the same models. The WD/WD45's seem to have more Marvels than Zeniths at present, but as I said, that's just what I've been recording since we've been rebuilding. I'm sure I'll gather more info as customer carbs come in for repairs. The Marvel TSX-154, & 159 seem to be the most popular so far that we've been rebuilding. BTW- The I.D. tags are riveted on both type carbs for reference. Horizonal on Zeniths, Vertical on M/S's. HTH Steve/B&B Custom Circuits

Slowpoke, the Allis-Chalmers shop manual shows only two carbureters, the Zenith, and Marvel Schebler. Unfortunately, it doesn't say which of the following model numbers goes with which carburetor, but you should be able to get that. The first one listed is a 61 AJ 7. Its size was 7/8", updraft (of course), main jet fixed, idle jet-adjustable, venturi size 13, main jet size 19, main discharge jet size 45-2, idle jet size 15. The other one listed was a 161 J 7. Venturi on it was size 13, main jet size 18-1, main discharge jet size 45, idling jet size 15. By the way, the B and C were the same. Hope this helps a bit. God Bless.

Pon... the models 61AJ7 and 161J7 are both Zenith. I only have the I&T shop manual, #AC 11, 1960, which says: "110. Models B,C,CA, and RC are equiped with Zenith model 61AJ7 or model 161J7 carburetor."
Replacement carbs are listed as fitting more than a half dozen OEM carbs, yet there are only 2 OEM carbs.

Yeah, I see what you mean. Some confusion here I guess. My model list came from the Allis-Chalmers "Knowledge Means Power" shop manual we used to use in our dealership in the B-C Specifications page. Then on the page B-C 26 were shown in some detail the two carburetors. A picture on the left shows a Zenith and the one on the right shows the Marvel Schebler, but there is no reference there of the model numbers which were shown in the Specifications page. And this is their official factory shop manual. They go on to give float level measurements for the two and all. There is a reference in both pictures of a disc attached to the carbureters and the caption for that disc reads "Important: Give outline No. stamped on disk on throttle body when ordering carburetor parts." I don't guess I helped much with all this but it's all I had. I did have a spare carburetor on hand but let it get away in a trade that turned out unfortunate for me. Wish I could help more. Have a good day and God Bless.

Most auto carbs used to have a tag when they left the factory, but usually get lost. I know MS carbs have a disk riveted on the body with the model #.
I think Zenith #s are stamped in the body casting.
Thanks, John
