We have 45 turned around for a fork lift application. Converted to 12 volt, internal resistor coil. When cold, engine will fire and run for 2-3 seconds, kills, and will not fire agian for an hour or two. If you pull start it will start and run fine. As soon as the engine is warm it will key start every time! New coil, plugs, points, condenser, rotor, solinoid. At my wits end. any suggestions?

Try using a coil made for a ex. resistor 12 V to coil on start up and use ex, resistor for run starter may be drawing to much power

Just a shot in the dark here but I was thinking that if the batterie connections (or all electrical connections) are corroded or loose possibly when starting the tractor with starter motor the starter is pulling all the power from the batterie and not letting any other power go to the coil. But when pull starting it there is no power going threw the starter. Just a thought.
Also check the ground cable.

Check things while the engine is in its "won't start" mode. Is there still a good spark? Does the compression seem good? Check compression anyway - there could be a valve problem. Pull-start it sometime... if it keeps running when warm. With the engine running, check the timing. And one last thing, are your manifold gaskets tight? If you have good spark, odds are it is either timing or an intake manifold gasket. As the head warms up, it could expand and make the manifold tighter, masking your problem.

Just an idea for you try hot wireing it, if it runs that way its the switch.
