Hi all,

I'm a realtor and was at a home today that I will be listing and asked the owner if the tractor was going to convey with the house. He said, "Yeah, unless I can find someone who wants to buy it." Being a gearhead in general (with no tactor experience, but I aspire to own one) I've been thinking about that. I would love to own it but probably won't. I figured I'd try to help him out and help out anyone who might want to buy it. He claims it's a "1938 Allis D". The few minutes of google research I've done tell me that it's not that simple. So I figured I'd ask if anyone can tell me what to look for next time I'm there to help identify the old tractor. It has what appears to be a channel type frame (enough different than most tractors that it caught my eye). It's a smaller tractor and has some sort of green (pretty light duty looking) mowing deck suspended from it. (this has nothing to do with the model...but oh well). I'll be there sometime this week with a digital camera and some time. What and where do I need to look to learn about this and establish a rough value?

Thanks!
Alex

Could it be an IB?

The fact that you noticed a channel type frame is significant, although there is no such thing as a 1938 D, or any other year of a D model. The channel frame was used on a WC, WF,RC, WD, WD45. The first three would have a serial number (preceeded by the letters) on the center of the rear axle 'pumpkin', on a flat surface about 2 by 4 inches halfways between top center and midway down the rear side. Some WWII WCs had the steel, rather than cast rear end, but still had the serial number. WD and WD45 ('48-'53 and '53-'57) have the differentials and rear axles bolted together, and the serial number is on the rear vertical face of the differential, near the left side. All of these models use a 'drop' style of driveline down to the wheel axle. The RC '39-'41, uses a smaller engine, while the others all use a similar size engine.

Thanks all!

It's an hour away from me so I'll try to get some photos and scrounge around for a serial number when I get up there next. It had a narrow front end, looked pretty sad, flat rear tire(s)...etc. He claimed it took 5 hours of work for every hour of run time so he bought a lawn tractor for his 3 acres ;).
Thanks again,
Alex

Little to go on? Allis-Chalmer RC 1939 to 1941 in guide book. 4 cyl, 125 cid gas, xmsn 4f-1r, 18 pto hp, 2595 lbs, lo 700, mid 1260, hi 1630 with lower offers if owner has minimal interest.
Depends on condition of rig and how much repairs may cost. Good luck.

Alex,

Take a couple of photos and post them on this site in the "tractor photos" section. With a channel frame, it could be a WD or WD45 or maybe a WC. Also could be others. Once you post the pictures we'll have a good idea of what it is and then we can tell you where to look for the serial number--that will confirm model and year made.

i agree probably a WC or WD. the rear wheels should be 28 inch. If the rear axle looks like it came off a 2 ton truck, then it might be a WC and the serial number is on the axle pumpkin. IF it has a tractor type rear axle with drop box final drives, then look on the left rear alxe berake cover area for a WD or WD45--- serial number. If this is a parts tractor you are talkniga bout $300. If it runs and looks like crap you are talking about $600. If the tires are decent and runs good, could be a little over $1000.
