I have a 1947 Model B with a 3 speed transmission. First gear moves the tractor way to fast for some tasks. Has anyone ever devised a way to add a low range to this model?

Thanks for the responses. As Steve notes, the tractor moves too fast when you are using a dirt blade. The older I get, the more I appreciate a slower pace.

the B moves right along in first gear. i have a blade on mine and it is o.k. for snow, but if you are blading dirt its kind of hard to keep up with. I have never heard of a way to change ratios.

What are you doing that requires a slower speed?

Arkansas Bill,

I've heard of pullers installing an extra tranny on the WC models, but haven't heard of anything like that on the B's.

It might not be feasible, but if you could install smaller diameter rear rims/tires, you would end up with a slower travel speed for a given engine speed. I believe the factory size is 24" and the cast centers might limit you on any smaller sizes, but I thought I'd mention it as a possibility--easier than adding another gearbox or changing gears in the tranny.
