WHY DON'T YOU WIRE BRUSH THE AREA OF THE NUMBER REAL GOOD THEN LIGHTLY RUB OVER THIS AREA WITH A SOAP STONE AND THEN THE NUMBERS SHOULD STAND PROUD ENOUGH THAT THEY CAN BE READ.

Unless it is a very early WD, it is not on top of the brake housing. Look on the rear, vertical face of the left brake housing. It should begin with WD. Near the hole with the spring hooked to it.

Thanks JMS/MN for the information. I checked where you said but it is badly rusted and I can not see it at all. Do you know of any other way of telling what year tractor would be? Thanks again.

Not reliably. You might find a cross-reference to an engine number, but engines can be changed easily. Try lightly sanding or wirebrushing the area of the serial number. Doublecheck on another tractor so you know exactly where to look on yours. If you can determine if it is 4, 5, or 6 digits it could give you an idea on year. They were made from 1948 until 1953. The operator manual has an excellent example of where to look for the number.

The axle housing between the differential and the final drive gears has a casting date on them. I believe that you read one from the front of the tractor, and one from the rear. That date may be close to the model year of the tractor.
