Hi,
I have a '49 AC WD with a wide front axle. I may be getting a WD-45 with a crop-row front end. I'd like to put the wide front end on the WD-45. Can it be done? Can it be done fairly simply? If so, can anyone describe how this is done?
Thanks,
Al

Everyone that has replied has the job described perfectly. I swapped narrow front ends (dual wheel) on my WD last winter. Both fronts had the 1/2" bolts busted off at the casting, common problem. I drilled the centers of bolts out with a 1/4" or 5/16" bit then blew the rest of the bolt out with a torch. The bolts melt and flow out and leave the cast fine. Then cleaned up threads with tap. Maybe you don't have this problem, just throwing in 2 or 3 cents worth.

Get the torch Scotty. . . I haven't done that move in a long time. For anyone who hasn't tried it, the trick is in letting the center of the stud or bolt become quite molten before hitting it with a blast of oxygen. Just remember that there will be a ton of sparks and slag blasting right back at you; so, step back from your work a bit as you hit the O2 lever. In any case, this is a real handy thing.

By row crop , do you mean dual wheel or single wheel? If it is a single wheel the gearbox does not need to be changed out, depending on if it's a 3 bolt or 4 bolt. Unbolt the pedestal and bolt on the front axle.

Hi,

Dual wheels--not a tricycle--although your response opens up some new possibilities. Some of the trikes I've looked at are in pretty good shape, and it sounds like converting any of them to a wide axle would be pretty easy.

Thanks,
Al

They are interchangeable, but you don't need to remove any side rails. Just loosen up the bolts on the rails- ok to remove the lower radiator bolts to get more slack, but all you need is a bit of space, and you can remove the front steering casting of each and exchange them.

Take off the left frame rail, it is much easier than the right. The right one gets involved in hydraulic oil in the belt pully opening. After supporting the tractor with the right rail with the front tires just skimming the ground remove the left rail. Don't forget the cap screw that goes into the bottom of the radiator. Unbolt the front engine cross member from the left rail and all the capscrews readially visible on the side and remove the rail, may need a wedge or pry bar. To remove the steering box or pedestal don't for get to disconnect the steering shaft at the universal, and remove the one capscrew that holds the bearing that supports the steering shaft right near the u joint. Front end parts are heavy, be carefull. All will fit from WC to WD, to 45.

I will agree that you can change a front end without removing the left frame rail, however it is easier if you do. They can be a tight fit and having one completly off makes it easier to get the casting out of the other one. I should have mentioned too that when putting the capscrew back that holds the radiator to the frame, make SURE that you use a bolt that isn't too LONG. If you use a too long bolt you will be taking the radiator off to have it fixed where the bolt screwed itself into the bottom of the radiator. I think less than one inch is enough, like 7/8", but I am not sure, it is well worth looking as youscrew in the capscrew.

I'm sure they are interchangeable. To swap them is no problem, I did it 4 weeks ago. Support your tractor, with the front tires off the ground. Remove the steering shaft. There is a cross member, I took it off one side of the frame, also there are bolts holding the radiator and the motor. Make sure all bolts are removed and everything is supported good.I then removed the 8 bolts holding the front end to the frame. We needed to use a couple of wedges to split the frame just a little to pull the unit out the front. Look out, its heavier than it looks. We cleaned it up good(the frame and the wide front end going in)put a little oil on it and with the bucket from another tractor lifted it up and slid it in place. We then replaced everything that was removed. Before changing it, check out all the bearings and gears for turning it is alot easier before than when it's all assembled. Take your time supporting everthing is important. Especially the motor!!!!! !!!!! !The whole job took about 2 hours.
