Hi all, I was on my way somewhere and as usual I keep my eyes open for old tractors. I ran across a bit of land that had a couple way back in the yard. They were both pretty rough. I got in touch with the owner of the land then later met him out there. I asked if he would be interested in selling them just to keep them out of the scrap yard. He told me if I got one of them running I could have the other one. I have a couple of Fords. I"m totally new to AC. The one I need to get running, I think, is a WD45. SN 216333, The seat on it is cast and says Deering. Is this tractor a 1955 WD45? This will be a challange for me. I"ve not yet brought one back from the dead. It seems like everything on it is stuck. It"s stuck in gear, the shifter won"t move, I"m sure the clutch is stuck. I"ve put MMO in the cyliders and been rocking it with the plugs out. Won"t move a lick. I really need a starting point with this rough diamond. It has an alternator so I"m sure it"s 12v. I pulled the started off today and am going to take it in and have it looked at and rebuilt if necessary. With power directly to it it does nothing. I realize the vast nature of this post. I"m going to take little steps I just need guidence. The one I"m getting if I get this one going is older. Couldn"t find the SN. It has round axle trumpets and differential. Not squared off in the back like the other tractor. It has a cracked block and who knows what else. Can"t argue with the price though. Thanks in advance for any and all assistance. Eric

Before you get a lot of money tied up in these tractors. Suggest purchasing a running WD or WD45 and using these tractors as parts tractors.

I am restoring my grandfather's WC. I currently have over $1000- in the project and that's on a tractor worth considerably less.

Just my opinion.

just an update in reply to Eric ATL, 09-21-2004 18:21:40
Thanks for the responses. I just wanted to answer some of your questions. The older tractor must be a WC. It has the long shifter that goes way forward. I'll have to get the SN next time I'm out there. First I'll have to remove the hydraulic pump (looks like a beer keg) to see the SN. There is a JD #5 sickle bar mower attached to the WC. He says I can have the pump but he's keeping the mower. That's ok, I just bought a #5 a couple of weeks ago.

I'm 25 miles NE of Atlanta in Lawrenceville GA.

The tires on the WD45 are all shot. The WC rear rubber looks good. Front, not so good.

On the WD45 I tried to remove the the shifter to get it into neutral. I got the lock ring out but the shifter is all the way forward and won't move back, just side to side, so I can't get the washer out that is under the lock ring. Do I need to pull the cover?

I am going to order manuals very soon.
Thanks to all, Eric

you may try the hand clutch (large lever to the right of the steering) to get it to move (maybe?) how are the tires/rims? many posts here on unsticking engines many opions. I've been trying to unstick a Case730 for 1+ year (haven't tried too hard) trans fluid didn't work.. trying PB blaster now.. where are you at? good luck

Eric, my book says you are correct. That serial number is for a late 1955 WD-45. I agree with Dave on everything else. I've had two WD's and had to rebuild both. I have a WD-45 also so I'm pretty familiar with the tractor. I just got a C Allis unstuck a couple of weeks ago. Had to pull the engine and put it in a hydraulic press to get the last cylinder free. You got your work cut out but it is doable. Email me anytime.

Eric, My information indicates that you have a '56 WD45 that you are working on. The shift lever is probably curved instead of straight like the WD's. Also there would be no plate on the right side of the engine like the WD or the WC. The other tractor sounds like a WC. The serial number on the WD's and WD45's are on the flat spot on the left axle housing. The WC serial number is right at the center of the back of the differential. There is a small rectangular flat spot and the SN will be in that spot. Lot's of times the tractor has been painted and will obscure the number. Scrape it until the number shows up. WC's have hand brakes and the shift lever is a long lever that omes up from the transmission and bends back towards the rear.
Another difference between them is that WD's have a hand clutch and WC's don't. Also WD's have wheel widener rails on the rear wheels.
My experience with stuck tractors like you have is that most times you have tear them down to free them up. Definitely DON'T try to pull it to free it up, you could easily bend the rods. Water has gotten inside of the engine and set it up. You don't say where you are, but if the exhaust has been open for several years, rain gets into the engine and I have seen a block where the sleeves were actually split inward because of the frozen water in the down 2 cylinders.

Other than that,if you got the tractor cheap enough, it will be a fun challange to get it going. I just had a neighbor give me 2 "B's" and an SC case. Another friend gave me a B-C. (Front end C, rear end B) This tractor was also set up, the transmission didn't have any oil it and when I loaded it, it skidded all the way up the trailer ramps.
Good luck on your projects
Dave
