I have an AC mod CA. Do I have to have an over-ride, ratcheting device, (don't know the proper name) to use a sredder. It has a hand clutch.

I left a overideing clutch on a H farmal to long and it wore the power shaft on the tractor so that it will not turn the overideing clutch any more. If you look at the overideing clutch you will see that less than a inch of the shaft is takeing all of the abuse there fore eating on the lugs of the main shaft.

The foot clutch will disengage power to both the drive train and the PTO, but since the hand clutch is still engaged the power train and PTO are mechanically tied together and the inertia of the rotating bldes will continue to drive the tractor forward. You can use the brakes to help stop this from happening.

Disengaging the hand clutch will stop the forward motion of the tractor but will allow full power to be transmitted to the chopper.

No, your foot clutch will stop power to the PTO and wheels so a brush hog won't push the tractor. The hand clutch will also cut power to the wheels so an overrun clutch is not necessary for a CA.

John, with all due respect, I will humbly disagree. If using ONLY the foot clutch, even with the pedal depressed, the pto and wheels are most definately connected together, and the spinning brush hog will tend to drive the tractor right into an obstruction whether it be the barn, tree or creek. Granted, the hand clutch will stop the wheels, but in a panic situation standing on the foot clutch and the brakes at the same time have taught many a farmer a lesson they will never forget.

While you are right, depressing the clutch will disconnect power from the engine to both the wheels and the brush hog, it does not disconnect them from each other.
