I have recently acquired a 1956 WD45. It has power steering. How would I deterime if it is factory or aftermarket.

Thanks

The factory unit has the tank for fluid up under the hood on right side & to avoid the bolt, they put the Allis decal back behind bolt. John's photo shows it well.

The factory unit is a big old ugly thing that sets down on the frame. Most of the aftermarket units were Charlyn and the torque generator will be about 3 inches in diameter and 7 inches long spliced directly into the steering shaft, usually right behind the headlight.

It's just a picture I lifted out of the archives to illustrate what a factory power steering unit looked like. The picture was submitted by Eddie Edington from Fithian, IL.
