What is the difference between a WD and a WD 45? Thank you ..... andy

Jim D. and Gatz are correct in all their information about the differences between "factory original" WD"s vs. WD45"s, however, these tractors are now up to 56 years old and most aren"t factory original any more. To be honest the serial number really only tells you what the rearend housing was originally from. The removable plates on the right side of a WD engine block tell you that the block was originally a 201 c.i. WD block. A block without the removable plates was a WD45 block. Parts inside the engine are mostly interchangable. Around my area, ever since the 60"s at least, it was common for WD engines to be upgraded with what were called 45 kits when they were overhauled. The local AC dealer did it all the time and I"m sure other mechanics did too. They would install a WD45 crank and pistons into a WD block. Now the two engines were basically the same. We had a WD that was a 2 plow tractor before the overhaul and after the overhaul you could hook on to the 3 bottom that was for our WD45, and you couldn"t tell any difference between the power of our repowered WD and our WD45. Our WD, like many others, was changed to a snap coupler bell from the pin hitch. It was easy to convert equipment from pin to snap also, so I think it is pretty rare to find tractors or equipment still in the pin hitch configuration. My point is, that a serial number or even an engine block style, gives you some information, but in many many cases they can"t and don"t tell you everything about a tractor.

Main difference was big increase in HP
26.14Belt & 24.31DB for the WD(using a 201cuin 4 cyl), 1948-1953; VS. 43.21Belt & 37.84DB for the WD45 (226 cuin 4 cyl PowerCrater) which was introduced in 1953 and ended when the D Series was brought out in 1957. The WD45 also used an optional 6 cyl Diesel engine.
The Snap-Coupler was a new feature for the WD45 and replaced the HitchPin setup of the WD; even though both made use of the TractionBooster System.
Some have stated that the WD used a straight shift lever exclusively, and the WD45 a curved lever, but according to "Allis-Chalmers Farm Tractors and Crawlers DATA BOOK" by Terry Dean, at WD Ser #127008 (1952) and up, a curved lever was used with the improved constant-mesh transmission which was carried on into the WD45 line. If you are looking to buy one, check the serial number located near the left brake cover or rear of housing.

Also, 45"s had more radiator and 13 in rims with (now called) 14.9 tires.
