Recently restoring a C Allis Chalmers and found that the engine bearings were shot, along with the crankshaft. The machinist said that it looked to him that the bearings were starved for oil. When I got the tractor it was full of oil. I found how the main bearings oil, through the block from the pump, but how do the rod bearings oil, are they a splash lubrication. Just wanted to know if anybody knew anything.

Hi Adam,

The center of the hollow camshaft is an oil gallery which provides a spray lube to the connecting rod bearings. Here's the direct quote from the B/C Service Manual:

"The camshaft has four holes drilled in it directly in line with one each of the connecting rods. The connecting rod has a hole which is funnel-shaped drilled in the upper part of bearing. Oil is sprayed through the centrifugal force of the rotating camshaft and the pressure maintained in shaft into the crankcase. This stream of oil is met by the connecting rod and the impact forces oil into the rod oil holes and into the groove of bearing insert."

Very good Rod, and if it was being starved for oil that caused the damage, it would be because eather the pump had lost its prime or the oil level was below the suction line at the time of the damage. I am sure that you have heard about people that run their truck out of oil and filled it back up to see if the noise would go away.
