I hate to be bothering everyone here with my B but I got a problem with the main bearings. I got brand new bearings and the crank had been truned. I put it all together with the shims and tighted them down to 80 foot pounds. The crank will spin freely for 5 or so times around then it will hit a snag. It spins thens gets this "stuck" feeling then after that it gets better again. Then a few more turns it will get stuck again. The front main has some wear on the front were it comes it contact with the crank gear. What could cause this "stuck" feeling????
Thanks for the help!!!!
Andrew

Have you checked the clearances with plastigauge, and have you shimmed for proper "crush"? These things may not be the answer to your problem, but are two things you would want to have done.

First off did you use something like STP oil treatment on them when you put it togeather? Also did you make sure your fingers had oil or stp on them before touching any of them? If no to one or both of those question then that could be where your problems are. Also did you order the bearings to fit the crank I.E. if crank was turned 20 under did you get 20 over bearings? You never touch parts with out oil on your hands and you never install parts with out oil/stp on them

how can it turn 5 revolutions then drag?? do you have a few thousands end thrust or is it dragging on the sides of the bearings? after several revolutions you might need to add a few drops of oil to the bearing to roll again. that minimal amount dont stay in there forever.

Like steve said on checking the end play and making sure it is lubed. I am wondering which main you put the thrust bearing. That bearing has to run against the crankshaft timing gear. Also what is the condition of the back side of the crankshaft timing gear. The other question would be wheather you put the thrust main bearing on the block or cap. It goes in the block. Just some questions that come to mind, but if it turns free for five turns something has to happen different to cause the crank to and bearing to change locations a few thousands to the rear or forward.

That thrust bearing is that the one with the "sides" If so I have it installed in the end cap. Sounds like it needs to be revesed. I just put it together like the way I took it apart. The one with the sides was in the end cap. This seems to be a problem! Thanks for the help

That is the bearing I was talking about and you have it correct it does go on the cap as long as it is at the front/crankshaft timing gear. When I stated it went on the block I was wrong. Check between the thrust bearing side and the crankshaft timing gear with a feeler gage. You need at least .001 clearance and not over .005 to be within spec.
