D17 series 2 hydraulic problem

Hi, Im hoping any of you guys can help me. I have a d17 series 2 tractor that seems to be transfering the hydraulic oil from the hyd resevor to the transmission. The hydraulics will not work at all. How can the oil be transfering? What do I need to do to fix the problem? When I fill the hyd resevor to full I start the tractor and the hyds still dont work so I shut the tractor off and check dipsticks and hyd is not on the stick and the trans gets even fuller. Thanks for any help.

Hate to be the harbinger of bad news Joe, but to fix this problem you have to split the tractor. In the middle of the torque housing there is a seal between the hydraulic reservoir and the transmission. Hopefully this is not true; but most probably the case.

Disagree on the cause of problem.
'IF' the fluid levels were the same (relatively), the seal would probably be the way the oil is getting into the xmsn.
But, AC Joe had said that the hyd fluid was goin down so much after filling that it was off the dipstick and the xmsn/diff fluid was increasing even more.
I suggested he try leaving the levers in the down postion so that he could be certain. If the pump is not engaged, the oil would stay at the same level.
Another test to determine if the hose is shot, is to move the lift arms to the up postiion (if possible) and leave lift lever in hold postion; then push down on the arms....if they dont hold, the cause is likely the hose, or cylinder seal inside. There's a big difference between taking the lift arm housing off and splitting the tractor.

Gatz, Thank you very much for the help. Im gonna look at it this afternoon. I forgot to mention that the rear lift would not hold up or lift the rear blade. The broken hose problem sure sounds like it could be the problem. Im not as familiar with AC as I am with Deere and IH. Does the pump have to come out or require a tractor split? Thanks again for your help! Joe

Joe,
The pump does not have to come out, nor does the tractor have to be split to get at the hose and/or lift cylinder. Just need an overhead lift or cherry-picker.
Besides the hose (&/or cyl seals) you'll need the large gasket for the lift-arm housing, the gasket for the transport valve/distribution block on top of the differential (this could be made by hand) and the small o'ring for the cyl anchor pin. You may want to put in new cylinder seals while it's apart and replace the PTO seal at the rear of the housing. Write down your tractor's serial number for ordering parts.
I strongly encourage you to get a shop manual.
Either AGCO's Service Manual for the D17 or IT's AC-201 manual. I could copy the 2 pages in the AGCO manual and email them to you. Let me know.

I have exactly the same problem. I damaged mine by trying to lift too much weight. Am hoping it is the hose. Since mine happened somewhat slower than yours, I'm afraid I may have a cylinder problem.

Typically, on a D17, this means either the hydraulic hose going to the lift cylinder is ruptured or the cylinder seal is blown.
(I suspect the hose, if this occured suddenly)

Either requires the removal of the lift-arm housing. Which means draining the hydraulic fluid and the xmsn oil. (the PTO shaft has to be removed and it has seals at the front end of the transmission....be careful when pulling it out)

Was the lift lever in the "up" postion all the time?

You didn't say whether you attempted to operate the lift during the time the tractor was running.

Before tearing into it, try putting the lift lever in the lower postion (as well as the traction booster) and see if it makes any difference. The oils are already mixed, so it won't matter if you use it for a test.
