I am working on a 1948 WD that belonged to my papaw. It has been running until recently I removed the second (large cover) to the magneto. I meshed the gears correclty "C" in the middle tooth. I have found that the plugs wires are not at all where the are supposed to be. Yet it has been running yet lacking power. I'm puzzled. The only thing I can figure is that it has been timed wrong somehow. I would appreciate any help

ac-- all engines have marks to time the mag or distributor. this makes it easy for all of us. the plastic cap has specific points to locate the plug wires.--- what is realy important is the "order" the wires ae install in the cap. if you are familiar with an automotive engine you know you set #1 piston at TDC then install the distributor into the hole so the teeth mesh on the camshaft and the rotor at top is pointed to your #1 plug wire. you can install the distributor off a few teeth right? o.k., lets say you just arbitrarily install the distributor into the hole and engage the cam without paying attention to where #1 piston is on its stroke. now after installing the distributor you roll the engine untill #1 is at TDC and ready to fire. now look at the distributor and install the #1 plug wire into the cap where ever the rotor arm is pointed. who knows were that would be. now you just put the rest of the wires on starting at #1 in the correct order. now the motor will run great, but you have screwed the next guy if he uses the manual to install new plug wires--- see how it works?
