There are sure to be lots of different opinions on this subject. I have run straight 10W standard (non synthetic) API/SAE (high detergent) rated oil for inital "run in". I also pressurize the oil lines, galleries, rocker arms and bearings with oil before starting the engine by "pumping" at least three quarts of oil into the engine through the oil lines/galleries. After the engine is "run in", I like to use 10W-30 or 10W-40 Synthetic Oil(depending on the engine bearing clearances)(It sure makes starting the engine in cold weather EASY.) I have also used 10W-30 standard oil for "run in", but it did seem to take longer for the rings to seat/seal. I have heard that there is a "run in" or "break in" oil available that is used by some engine rebuilders. I cannot confirm this and do not know where any such "break in" oil is available. I do NOT think it is recommended to use synthetic oil for "run in" of a new or rebuilt engine. Are there any other opinions or personal experiences concerning using synthetic oil for "run in"?

I like to use a medium quality oil like Valvoline for break-in..10-30 is good.. Then, when the engine is well broken-in, I change to Castrol 10-40...

Andy,
Personally, I don't think it's neccessary to run a heavier wieght oil for new engine break-in. When I restored my B, I've been using 10w-40 in it since the engine's been done with no problems. You could run some hours on your oil of choice, then dump it and add new oil & filter just to get any break-in debris out. That's what I did. Been going for 4 years now, and runs fine. Good Luck with your B, they're a great little machine...!
