Hi guys

I have a question about the generator cut out assembly. I have a 6 volt positive ground generator without a cut out assembly. Do you need to have this on there. I have bran new wires connecting everything and still get a spark when I connect the Ground cable to the battery. Just wondered if you need that on there for this problem to go away. If not what else could be my problem.

Thanks in advance to everyone
Adam

Adam,
As John mentioned, you do need the cutout down stream. If you don't have the reverse current relay mounted on the generator, you have the wiring at the gennie hooked up incorrectly, that's why it's sparking. With cutout in place, wiring should be + side of Ammeter to starter motor, - side of Ammeter to cutout B, other side of cutout to A stud on gennie, F stud to resistor side of headlight switch. If you need a cutout, we have HD one's in stock. Drop us a line if interested.....

Has anyone tryed replacing the reverse currant relay with a solid state rectifiers like those used in the alternater circuit?

I used a diode for cutout when I built my first electronic voltage regulator to run a 12 volt VW generator (and engine) in a 6 volt bug. You need to be sure the diode has enough heat sink because at 30 amps it will be dissipation more than 20 watts. The voltage regulator needs to sense voltage at the battery, not the armature because the diode will drop at least 0.6 volts and more like a volt at high current.

Thanks guys,
That must be my problem. I will order a cutout assembly for it. That makes allot of sense now that you both mention how the wiring wont be wright without the cutout. That must be why I am getting the spark because there is no spark when I unhook the wires from the generator.

Thanks again
Adam

You need the cutout to disconnect the generator from the battery when the tractor isn't running. Just to check this, remove the wires from the generator and see if you still get the spark. If you still get the spark you have a short somewhere in the system.
