I got some troubles with the mag thats on my 38 B. Its a Fairbanks Morse FMJ type. The mag produces a spark at the points every 10 or so turns. However it still produces a spark at the plugs, a yellow orange color. I put new points, condensor, wires, plugs. I got the coil out and was wondering if there is a way to test it for ohoms outpoint???. I have a multimeter it thats needed. Thanks for the help!

Andrew,

We do a lot of work and repairs on our customer's magneto's. Jerry C made a good point on the re-magnetizing of the magnetic rotor. That is one major cause of a low current spark condition. Another thing to look at which is always overlooked, is the correct alignment of the two contacts. Because of the design of the F/M points, the tension band that wraps around to the junction point for the condensor, mag kill, and coil, tends to "lift" the contact arm which in turn misaligns the contacts causing a low current spark. A little tweaking is in order to get the contacts aligned correctly with one another to make good fire. Another problem F/M had with their "J" series mags was the old style tar-taped coil. These would leak and eventually ground themselves on the mag housing intermitantly causing low current spark. Replacing the old style coils with the newer epoxy coils is a big improvement. If you still have troubles, drop us a line, be happy to help you out! Good Luck!

The coil needs tested on a coil tester to see if it will fire on minimum amperage. The armature likely needs recharged after so many years because the magnetism grows weak.
