Check the fill plug for the power director/ hydraulics compartment for a plugged vent. If the vent is plugged it will build pressure in the compartment as the oil heats up and push oil past the PTO seals or input shaft seal into the transmission.

I'm not sure I'm disagreeing with Gatz or AC John or not. I just had a problem with the hydraulic fluid getting in the transmission of my D-17 Series II. It was a result of bad seals on the cylinder. But as I recall, a Series IV has external cylinders. If they leak, it goes on the ground. If it is the power director oil getting in the transmission, doesn't it have to be a seal between the power director and the transmission?

What series D17 ?

If you're referring to the combined PD/hydraulic oil on an earlier D17 (not SerIV, or some SerIII),
usually, it's either a leaking lift arm cylinder inside the rear housing, OR a leaking or ruptured hose going to the cylinder.
Either one requires the removal of the lift-arm housing. You'll have to remove the pto shaft first, so might as well drain out all the oil from xmsn and PD/hyd.
Be careful!!when pulling the PTO shaft out so as not to damage the seals (there are 2 of them back-to-back at the front of the xmsn casting)

There's also the possibility that the PTO seals themselves are leaking, however; the fluid levels would be about the same from the PD/hyd to the xmsn.

Forgot to add..... you'll need a new gasket for that housing.
