I have an Allis Chalmers C which has cracks in the top of the block between each sleeve on the head gasket sealing surface between each cyl. Is this common ? Will it cause any problems if I simply put in new sleeves and pistons and new head gskt. ? Is there any easier repair to lessen the problem ? Are there any good sources for rebuilt short blocks. ? Thanks.

AC must have had some cheapfoundries making blocks back thenbecause those cracks are common to most of the lettered tractors. Alot of the dyed in teh wool AC guys will argue that, but it sure seems to be the case.

These cracks are quite common. In fact, they may be the norm. I've rebuilt some with cracks and one with out. The head gasket seals around the top of the sleeves. So the cracks really don't hurt anything. If you have cracks at the bottom of the sleeves as viewed from the oil pan side, the block is scrap. I wouldn't worry about those on top.

As Texas Denny said the cracks on top of the block wont hurt a thing. My 41 C has cracks in top of the block and has been running fine for 15 years after we rebuilt it. Just as Texas Denny stated look close at the botton of the block where the sleeves set in the bottom of the block for cracks. I know of a B that cracks in the bottom of the block and the man uses Ceramic seal and had no problems with it.
