WD45 electrical problem

When I take the battery cable(gnd) off while running it starts to miss and backfire through the exhaust. I suspect the generator isn't putting out causing the miss. Background is the PO had a 12V battery on it(neg gnd) with what I think is a 6V gen and a 6V coil. I changed the points/condensor with the same result while using a 6V POS gnd battery and polarized gen. I 'think' the misuse with the 12V system has caused some electrical gremlins. Any help is much appreciated!

Hmmm, I didn't know that wd45's ever had a magneto. THANKS for the testing info though, I'll give it a try.

didnt mean to misslead you. my point was -- generically-- a magnito does not need a battery to operate. if you pull the battery cable off a generator equipped tractor (12 volt), you can send 25-30 volts to the coil and point, not a good idea. you can run the tractor on the battery with the generator disconnected, but dont run witht he battery cable off or you have no voltage regulation.

Steve, Thanks again for the feedback! I found out today that the coil was wired backwards and the Field of the generator was direct wired to the gen. frame, bypassing the the voltage regulator. Thanks for the information!

if you have a magnito, it dont need the battery. a distributor with coil needs a battery. if you have a generator it is not a good idea to lift the battery cable while running.--- if you wnt to check the generator, get a good volt meter. ground the "F" terminal while running the motor and measure the voltage across the "A" and "F" terminal of the generator. witht he "A" wire still connected to the battery thru the cutout or regulator you will get 7 volts on a 6 volt system, or 13.8 volts on a 12 volt system. if you want to test the generator only, lift the "A" wire off. ground the "F" start tractor and measure the voltage across "A" and "F". you will get about double the regulated voltage when the battery is not connected.
