The serial number on my 54' WD45 has long since rusted off the rear end. I can sort of make out what may have been numbers at one point. Is there any way to recover the serial number? I have the engine serial number if that is of any use.

Well, I looked closer and could make out what appeared to be the last 4 digits of my serial number "3468." I also know that the tractor was purchased March 18, 1954. Does anyone know what the first 2 digits would be?

I hope I can help, it is hard to tell from this distance (Alaska). But I"ll give you some ideas that have worked in the past to some degree. Depending on weather the numbers are stepped, razed, or panted on, and also depends what the numbers are on i.e. cast iron, aluminum tag, or steel tag.

I have used some spray either type penetrating oil which evaporated quickly and that brought out the numbers. Have someone on standby to write down the numbers as you call them off because the numbers go away so quick. NO SMOKING.

Large format digital pictures may be able to help. Take some pictures and look at them, that way you can ZOOM in at different aspects of the numbers.

I have also used some steel wool (lightly) to remove any broken paint or to clean any rust away, DON"T BRUSH IT TOO MUCH OR TOO HARD, you just want to clean the loose rust n dirt off not the numbers. Then use some light oil, like Marvel Mystery Oil, ATF, or gun oil, this may bring out the numbers. Bring a magnifying glass and see if that helps you ID the numbers.

If the numbers are stamped or razed on a tag. The tag can be removed, turn it over and you should be able to read the backwards numbers.

And the last thing which works is magniflux, Law enforcement have been using this application for years to retrieve altered and/or marred numbers, and now I see it in aerosol cans.

More of a query. Comments on a practical Magnaflux application to restore concealed numbers on weapons etc. Possibly burned vehicles. Concealed in this context includes grinding, scraping and impact concealment. Reply: Law Enforcement Applications -Kevin 7/29/2005 My apologies for taking so long to answer your question. For serial number retrival applications you should use magnetic particle inspection wet method visible or fluorescent particles. You could use a yoke and apply the wet method particles such as 7HF, 9CM (visible) or 14AM, 14A AquaGlo (fluorescent which will require a darken inspection area and black light). All products are available in aerosol cans. If you need instructions for the use of the yoke, you can download it from the document library.
Contact me at any time if you have any other questions.

Good Luck with your numbers
