Hey Adam,

i'm glad you discovered the problem, but i wish to point out that i had one that would not run.. so i seen this ole boy..he is an Allis Chalmers man from way back! and he does mags too, really good, his name is Ron Gould,he is in Milaca Minnesota..

anyway he told me that on some Wd 45's the timming mark on the cam shaft gear was stamped wrong, and i discovered that he was right,so i had to time it accordingly, after a few trials and misses,i finally got it right, i mean who would of thought that? that the gear was stamped wrong with the timming marks in the wrong place?

i just wanted to share this, great site here for information, and all friendly fellows

~Will

Actually, a little more information would help. How far apart did you take this engine?

Double check the timing gears on the front of the engine. The marks on one gear must match up with a mark on the adjoining gear.

i took the`head off and pulled the cylinder liner out and pressed in`new liners and putthe head back on so i had to take off some parts that were in the way like the manifold and the distributor i didnt touch the timing gears

Sounds like you may have tightened your rocker arm shaft down too far.

i found the problem it was to do with the rocker arm but it was because the new head gasket was 1 mm thiner so that messed the setting up on the rocker arms thanks for your help

Good deal. The rocker/ tappets/ space between the rocker and valve stem should be reset every time the rocker arm assembly has been removed and then rechecked after the engine has run for a short time. I go back thru and recheck torque on the head bolts and rocker settings after no less than 1/2 hour of run time. I cut my teeth on six cylinder chevys and check and reset rocker arm settings at a slow idle. Still do. My feeler gage and shirts show it.

Valve adjustment while running??? in reply to Dick L, 08-26-2005 09:23:10
I have heard of people doing the adjustment running, but never seen it or heard how it was done. Just out of curiosity, could someone explain this to me? Thanks

Hurst
