When shifting my range shift lever from park/neutral to either low or high range I get grinding gears even though I have the clutch engaged. The clutch is engaged to the second stage with plenty of force on it, but it doesnt seem to stop the gears enough for a clean shift. Is there an adjustment on the clutch for this, or is something else needed? Thanks to anyone who knows. Al

If you put the transmission in 1st or reverse, it shouldn't grind. It lets the range shift gears synch with the rest of the trans.

I believe there is a transmission brake that stops the gears from turning since a wet clutch has drag. I don't have a manual for my 7000 with my, but it tells you how to adjust it on that tractor, and it should be the same for the 7040. I think there is a rod that is on the door side of the tractor (if it has a cab) along the torque tube. Can't quite remember exactly. Try the unofficial allis chalmers forum.

on the power shift models have someone push the clutch pedal down ,with the tractor off, and makesure there is .001 to .020 between the inching spool and linkage. you can find the pst valve on the right side behind the batt trays. the inching valve sticks out the back. there is a break test port just below and to the front about should be 30 psi. if you have psi and no break some thing is draging. good luck
