Does anyone know if a 1966 AC D17 series IV can be turned into a 3 point. I"m looking at one now and the seller has the bottom arms for it, but what about the third (stabilizer) arm? where does it go or where do I buy a bracket for it? Please e-mail me at airdefender@rocketmail.com I also have up close pictures of it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

John

The answer to your question, NO not all series 4 D17 came with factory three point. I have the last series 4 diesel sold new in the State of Iowa. It is a snap coupler, the three point from a 170, 175 180 185 will bolt on. If you buy one get all the linkage to go with it.

Here's (2) pictures of what the 3rd link mounting bracket looks like on a D17SerIV.

If you want measurements, email me.

Mace,
Nope, just the end result of a LOT of hours cleaning & prepping and fabricating new hydraulic lines, etc, etc, on restoration of D17.
Been anxious to get it painted, but some other projects got in the way, and had to complete them first so that garage will be mostly empty.

Gatz, didn't all Series IV tractors have a 3 point? In this case, someone must have removed the bracket. Correct?

Denny,
According to Terry Dean's "ALLIS-CHALMERS Farm Tractors and Crawlers DATA BOOK";
the SerIV had Cat#2 3-pt as an option. Evidently meaning that you could get either the familiar Snap-Coupler or industry std 3-point.
The differential/rear casting is different than those in the earlier Series. (see pics)
The implication being that all SerIV had the capability of adapting to either style.

Gatz, I checked it again and see you are correct. Live hydraulics appear standard and 3 point is an option. I've never seen one without both and made a bad assumption. Thanks for the clarification.

The Series IV came from the factory with a Category II three point hitch. If no place existes for the top link, someone must have removed the bracket. Sorry I don't have a picture - my parts book is for Series I thru III only.

I have a series 1 1957 D17 purchased new from the dealer. It came with a catII 3 point hitch. Since it is a 57 it has the internal hyd cyl raising and lowering the lift arms. My only regret is we did not buy it with power steering.

That is interesting. It sounds like you bought it yourself new in 1957. Not many one owner tractors in the US that are nearly 50 years old. According to Allis Chalmers and every expert I've read, Allis did not make a factory 3 point before the Series IV. It is completely possible that the dealer added an after-market three point before the sale to you, recognizing the benefit of a 3 point. Could you post one or two pictures of the rear of the tractor in "Tractor Photos" under the Galaries to the left of this note. I think a lot of people would be interested in a 3 point purchased new in 1957. I know that I sure am interested.

Thanks for responding.

I agree.....that would be most interesting to see a 57 D17 with factory 3-point.

Re: D17 adapter in reply to airdefender, 10-08-2005 16:44:52
Some adapters tie the top link back into the wishbone frame of the adapter. That way you hook up the implement with adapter just like AC implements. Of course this will make the implment pivot around the snap coupler under the tractor.
