oil pressure on WD

Once again I must ask for help from you experts out there on a continuing problem. I have a 1948 WD that runs great but has no oil pressure. I have checked all the lines to the filter and from the oil pump to make sure they are not plugged. I even stuck the oil pump in a bucket of oil and even turning by hand it pumps. I have bought and checked a new oil press. gauge with air to make sure it works. I changed the oil filter to a Fram c-159 as someone out there suggested. I checked the spring on the relief valve and it is ok. If I hold it in manually it closes the by-pass. (using air to check through the oil pump discharge line).

I think I know what the problem is but I have no solution. In the base of the oil filter mount, there is a large "hole" that drains the oil back to the pan. There is nothing I can see to direct the oil up through the filter instead of it just running back into the pan. It appears to me to short circuit back to the pan instead of going through the filter which would create a restriction and cause a back pressure. Am I using the wrong type of filter? Or am I just all wet in my theory? Would really appreciate anyone's help? Sorry this is so long.

Check the plugs in the end of rocker arm shaft , My WD had no oil pressure ,replaced oil pump; oil filter;checked bearing clearince no help. I found that the plugs are made of cork and had came apart. have not got the WD back togther yet.but i think that this is the problem

I'm sure that Brian is correct. That stand tube must be inside the filter for it to work properly.

Also, when I worked on the relief valve for a WD, it was very difficult to get sufficient pressure on that spring. If you can get the screw in easily, oil pressure will be low. I had to use a lever to hold that plug in position while I turned it in to get mid scale pressure (about 10 psi). As I recall, it took two people. If the engine is out of the tractor, it is much easier to install this plug. To increase oil pressure, just add washers inside the plug before installing the spring. Put in as many washers as you can and still get it together.

Brian and BCnT both have valid points to consider. I think that it is more than likely what Brian mentioned and or wrong oil filter.

There is supposed to be a tube screwed to the base that passes up thru the center hole of the filter. I have heard of this tube unscrewing when the filter is removed and being discarded with the used filter. If there is no tube in your base, this may be your problem. Without the tube, like you say, the oil will just cycle thru the housing without benefit of the filter restriction.

Thank you very much for your information. There is no pipe or stand tube in the filter housing. There is a threaded stub about an inch high. I have, unforturnately, thrown the old filter away long ago. Now I will need to find a new stand pipe or get the height of it and see if I can fabricate one. Does it seal against the top of the oil filter to force the oil through the filter? I will have to try some salvage yards to see if I can come up with anything. Thank you again! By the way, the nut on the relief valve on my tractor does screw in fairly easily.

Hi,

Here's the dimensions of that tube. I copied this info from a post here at YT some time ago. It is for a B but I think yours would be the same. The top of the tube has a rounded (almost spherical) end so it doesn't snag on the packed filter media when installing the filter. I would guess that a short piece of brass rod with a 0.118 dia hole down the center, rounded over on a grinder and fitted to plug the upper end of a piece of copper tubing would work fine.

AC-B Oil Filter Tube Dimensions:

It is 1/4" OD tubing. It is 3 3/4" long (above the extended base) The hole in the top is .118 Dia. 1/4" down from the top is the center of a hole .085" drilled through both sides.

There is no seal at the top of the tube the flow resistance comes from the packed media itself. The tube serves to force the oil to start at the top of the filter and flow down through the packed media to the gravity drain that goes to the oil pan. Just make sure you use a filter that has packed media. The NAPA 1101 (WIX is manufacturer) no longer has the packed media and results in an oil pressure reduction. As far as I know, the Fram C159 should be fine. You do need to have that tube in order to 1) get filtration of bypass oil at all and 2) to provide the backpressure from the filter media in order to achieve the designed oil pressure.

Thank You Rod for the information. I think I can come up with the materials and with your great information, make a new stand pipe. I think I will try this before I take the valve cover off again. I do believe this is the problem. I am amazed at the information available if you just ask. Thanks again!

I made the stand pipe and you were right on the money. The oil pressure came up to 10psi just as it should have. I will be sure I check to make sure the stand pipe is not thrown away in the future. Thank you, everyone, and especially you Rod for the information.

have you tried turning motor over without oil filter installed? i've seen oil pickups that were so close to bottom of pan they would cavitate...if theres any dents in oil pan that could be part of your prob.
