I have followed all directions to the letter. To recap. New points, new condensor, new plugs, (champion Boo Hiss I know), new wires, rebuilt carb, new head and manifold gasket, compression about 85-90psi on average. Coil is good, new batt.Ground valve seats, lapped valves. Got number one cylinder on compression looked through timing hole in bell housing and turned until it said "center". rotor button was turned to about 2:00 on distrubutor. Set firing order 1-2-4-3. It is getting gas as plugs are wet. It will not run. IT might putt two or three times and stop. Starter fluid has same effect. Pulling produces same results. Any detailed help would be GREATLY appreciated. I do not know how long it has been since it has ran. From the looks of it I would say 15-20 years. I bought it for $100 knowing it would need lots of help. But I am very lost right now. Would like to hear her run, before doing the body work.

You are looking at the flywheel Center mark through the hole in the drivers side of the tractor torque tube, and not through the bottom inspection hole right? I helped out a guy who had almost given up on his C, and he'd been timing it through the bottom hole in the torque tube, and it did just what your discribing.I had it running in about 5 mins! Hope this helps. Tim

I encountered a similar problem with my C. The mag would jump a spark but it was apparently not hot enough to fire under compression. I borrowed a mag off a running tractor and it ran. It may be worth a try.

Sounds like later timing. Advance the timing until it runs. You have went to far when the engine starts kicking back.

Agree with timing prob, double check. Have you tried pulling it to start? Our old CA was the only one we could count on to start, even with the hand crank.

When you say putt a couple times, do you mean just a couple of chugs. If you've shot some ether in there it should have actually run for about 2 seconds and spun up pretty good in the process.

If it's just getting putts or a couple of pops, the following may apply. If it's running a bit, this doesn't. Gotta go refresh my memory on the timing process but it almost sounds like you may be off a bit. If you get very close, starting fluid usually has made mine go ballistic quickly.

I think I would ignore the mark and manually find TDC Compression then set distributor postion. Point rotor so number one is just getting ready to open the points. I cant remember the direction but it's pretty clear in the manual I think. The reason I'm thinking this could be it was that I had a C with a B-125 flywheel and it wasn't marked. I start using a long straw to monitor TDC while I'd slowly crank after getting compression blowing at me. I use a pressure fitting and hose so I can operate the crank and monitor. Some one once told me they use a balloon on the end of the hose, never tried it!

Ok, just went to the shop. CA Manual shows pointing rotor just a hair past the battery lead, points cam should be almost there, it says go direction of rotation or counter clockwise till the points just start to break. Definitely need to make sure they DONT open BTDC. Sorry but I only have mag engines out there just now and sold my CAs 5 years ago and my memory isn't that good. Maybe someone else can elaborate.

do you have your distributer cap on backwards? that happened to me with my allis chalmers B and it would not start until I reversed how the cap was sitting on the distributer.

Andy, hope you used wire core plug wires, magnetos do not like newer type wires. Here is a great wibsite with info that might be of great help for you. Definantly help me in setting up mag on an Allis "C" that had set for 25 years also..HTH

Keith

If you"re getting gas, and you"re getting good spark, it has to be timing. I"d check for #1 on compression again, then make sure the rotor is pointing at #1 on the cap, then recheck firing order. Make sure firing order is set with the correct rotation of the rotor. I know you probably did all this already, but double checking couldn"t hurt.

I won"t whip over and help you tonight with me being in the North West Corner of Ohio.

Take a look at the drawing and make sure you have all the parts back in the carburetor as shown.
It could act like that if you forgot some parts, or you are firing number one plug on the exhaust stroke rather than the compression stroke. If as you say it has compression, the spark is at TDC at number one cylinder with both valves closed which would make it on the compression stroke, and the plugs have signs of fuel, it should run.

TDC will show in the inspection hole two times as the distributor makes one complete revolution. Common problem with people is to be one revolution off on the crankshaft and the roter pointing at number three when it should be pointing at number one.
