I have a '73 170 gas that I do custom brush hogging with and it rarely burns over 1.5 gallons an hour....very efficient 226 cid bullet-proof engine, fingertip hydrostat steering and quick hydraulics!

We had a D17 series 4 diesel, and I loved the hand clutch on it. The 170 and 175 in my opinion would be the best tractor for haying. The diesels have an easy to start, fuel efficient, east to work on, easy to find parts for, perkins 236 (170 and early 175) or 248(175). The only thing to watch is the 3rd and 4th gears (mostly 3rd). I have heard guys that make a living off of square bales say that allis has the gears just right for a square baler, which I would agree with from my experience with the series 4 d17 (basically the same as a 170 with different tin and diesel engine). Also, the 180 and 185 are a bit much for pulling a teddar and rake and would have more power than you would need for a baler. We pulled a 311 hayliner by NH with a 20ft flat on the back all over the place with the D17 and never had a problem with traction or power and I doubt the perkins in the 170 or 175 will have a problem either. Can't go wrong with any of these, but you will probably find the 170 or 175 a little better suited unless you find a 180 or 185 with a hydraulic engaged PTO, then you would gain added control over your PTO with the 180/185 but would compromise economy and manuverability. Good luck

Have two 180's. I am pulling a 605H (6'X 5'bale)model Vermeer round baler with the 180's . Do not run out of power. You can kick the pto out to turn and kick it right back in after you turn while on the go without using the clutches. Also pull a 9' Kuhn rotery mower. Just don't stick on that big!

I've had experience with the 175 and the 180 on square balers on rough ground and level pulling a wagon. Either are good machines. They have good live hydraulics and independent pto through the power director lever. They were both good to us. If you are talking about a big round baler someone else will have to weigh in on that.
