WC Magneto question

I have a 35 WC. I used it about 3 weeks ago and now can't get it started. It's been outside in the rain etc. I tried to pull start it and it wouldn't fire at all. It has a kill switch at the steering wheel that I checked and it is ok. I pulled the wire off the switch that goes to the distributor and it is shorted to ground. I pulled the dist. cap off and the spot where the wire makes contact inside, and the points, are grounded also. Is this a bad magneto, or, is this something that is supposed to be, until it gets some motion to it? Thank you,
Tony

Thanks Everyone in reply to amccabe1, 11-23-2005 05:38:45
Thanks for all the info. I did get it running again. I"m not 100% sure of the problem because I tried so many things. I cleaned the points, drained fuel, sprayed wd40 in distributor, took plugs out and checked, among other things. It finally started. Thanks again for all the ideas.

Tony

Clean the points off with fine abrasvive or contact file and set to .015" and if they are pitted out bad replace them as they will keep corroding. May need a condenser too? Make sure you hear the impulse catching and clicking when it turns over slow or it may need cleaning and oiling or attention if spring is broke. Should have a good hot blue spark and not a yellow spark. Get it dried out well and get some new cap gaskets to seal it up and be sure the dist. cap vents are open and not plugged with dirt, grease or bugs nests. Is it the Fairbanks Morse FM-J or X mag or a Wico or what? I have tune up parts, coils, and most other parts for those mags if you need help with those.

Sand off the points in the mag, they get white oxidation on them in a very short time, at least mine does.

My B has an FMJ mag...but, when it sat out in a gully washer, somehow I wound up with alot of water in the gas. This combined with a wet mag cap took me a couple of hours to get her running again...check the gas tank and bowl, drain the carb bowl into a dish and see if the water beads at the bottom of the dish...

The "KILL" terminal is internally connected to the points, the coil, and the condensor.

Disconnecting them, and testing individually, there should be infinite ohms from the condensor wire to ground, infinite resistance from the points terminal to ground (if the points are "OPEN"), but low resistance from the coil's primary terminal to ground. I can't recall offhand exactly what the coil's primary winding resistance should be, but it wouldn't be much, likely about 3 to 5 OHMS. Likely, that low resistance is what you are seeing, and reading it as a short.

I took the screw out that holds the wire from the magneto, the lead from the capacitor and the end of the points. The points and the capacitor are not grounded. The wire going to the mag has continuity to the frame of the tractor. The metal strip sticking out of the center of the magneto is not.

unless the points are OPEN it will show direct short...either bump it over till points are on lobe and open or stick a piece of celophane between contacts and check it again.

Your mag cap may be porous and you have mositure in the mag. If you can put the tractor inside you can dry the mag with a hair drier. Reassemble the mag to get the tractor running. After you have the tractor running you need to seal the cap. I use and have had good lucky using a clear acrylic lacquer top coat to seal porous mag caps. As this is absorbed the gray looking cap will turn black. After the top coat is dry the cap will be black and shiney like a new one. With the top coat dry I then paint the mag engine color to seal the mag even more. I use this on my Lincoln portable welder powered by a THD Wisconson that sets out in the weather. She will start every time after a rain.
