the wd has a 201 c.i. engine and the wd45 has a 226 c.i. engine. The bore on a wd is 4" where the bore on a wd45 is 4.5" adds to the other post "old knows best"

The engine block of a WD engine does have a large removable plate. The WD45 block does not have a removable plate on the side. Of course this does nothing to tell you what is inside the engine, and many many WD engines have been upgraded to at least near WD45 power. The curved shifter was use on all WD45"s as well as most of the last year of WD"s. Most parts are interchangable between the two tractors so after 50 or more years it"s not uncommon to find parts from one on the other. You can check the serial number guide on the left side of the page to tell you where to look and what numbers are good for what years. Decals are the worst thing in the world to go by when looking at a WD or WD45, NEVER trust them. A WD45 is usually worth 3 to 5 hundred dollars more than a WD in simular condition, however if the WD engine was upgraded with WD45 crank and pistons, then there really isn"t a reason for more than a couple hundred dollars difference in my opinion.

There 2 or 3 ways that I know of but it also depends on if the engine has been replaced. The WD-45 engine doesn't have a large plate on the side of the engine and the WD engine does, right side I think. Also the shape of the shifter one is coured and the other isn't sorry don't remember which is which. Serial numbers are stamped on the rear face of the tranny, thats as per the I-T manual.
