Have to replace the generator on my B. Generator guy said I should go to an alternator and change from a 6 volt to 12 volt system. Hate to lose the orginality of the tractor. Does anyone have an electrical schematic for the 6 volt generator, positive ground system? Also, does anyone have an electrical schematic for a converted alternator 12 volt system? Does going to a 12 volt, negative ground, going to affect the operation of the starter? Thanks.

My opinion is stick with the 6 volt. Mine is 56 years old and works fine

Dick is right, it is a personal opinion. The 6 volt system is older design, and may be harder or more expensive to get batteries. 12 volt is more common these days. You can go to a 12 volt generator to get the extra boost, and still look original. The alternator is very nice and trouble free, but does not look original if that is important. If the 6 volt is toast and will cost $100 or more to fix, it might be worth considering an update. Dont know if you need any more power, but the 6 volt system will never give more than 8-10 amps output. if you have extra lights or other power draw, the 12 volt systems are a definite plus.

Opinions are like noses, everyone has one. Mine would be to stay with 6 volts. The only opinion that counts is yours with it being your tractor and all.
