My pto is leaking where the small shaft goes into the housing. How do I fix this? Want to get this tractor running to use in the hay field for raking but don't want it leaking all the time. Thanks for any help. Also can I do this myself or should I have it done?

The leak is around the stub shaft. In the service manual it shows an "oil seal" that goes into the bearing cage. I think that is what is bad. I need to know how to slide the main PTO shaft back and if I can take just the bearing cage off and replace that seal or do I have to drop the whole PTO housing.

I misinterpreted the meaning of "small" shaft. I don't see why that stub shaft seal couldn't be replaced without dismantling the PTO housing. It would be akin to replacing a tailshaft seal in an automotive type trans. You still have to drop the PTO shaft extension carrier and move the shaft out of the way.

I believe Michael is thinking of the WC PTO housing. For the WD housing, the small (shifter shaft) seal can be picked up at NAPA Nat'l. #6241S or 50027S. While you're at it, you may want to also replace the large (PTO output shaft) seal as well. I got mine from NAPA #470027.

Oops, forgot you had a 3 part question! If you're moderately handy with a wrench, you can do it yourself. You have to drop the PTO carrier bearing at the rear of the tractor to enable you to slide the shaft rearward. Drain your gear oil using the plug at the bottom of the PTO housing. The housing just unbolts from the bottom of the torque housing. Those nuts are a bit of a nuisance as there is not much space to work with and the housing has to be gradually dropped as you unscrew the nuts. Pulling the shafts out of the housing is pretty straight forward; just make sure you put the shims back in when reassembling and you may have to make a new gasket or two.

You can remove the large nut at the rear of the housing and take out the old packing and replace it with water pump type packing. I am unsure what its called but you can pick it up at the parts store. It should be about 1/4 inch in diameter and just wrap it around in there twice and replace the nut and tighten it down. Oh be sure to drain the transmission first otherwise you will have one heck of a mess!
