I have a 1958 d17 diesel that i just rebuilt. the motor was stuck when i bought it. now that ive got it running,it misses on one cylinder.I have pulled a 3 bottom plow with it easily but it still wants to miss. i do however keep getting water in the fuel. the fuel bowl will fill halfway up with water in about 10 minutes of running. when you close the sediment bowl you can see little droplets of water fall off the filter. It has 4 new injector tips on it.but i am wondering if it was a bad batch of fuel or if it is the tank.it stays in a shed all the time now and i drained the tank before i pulled the engine down.so please tell me what yall think it is.any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for all the help. I am going to drain the whole fuel system and start over. New filters and fuel.I havent checked the energy cells in the head but only because I didnt want to risk breaking a stud. But I guess I will while Im working on it again.I think my first pull is around april 8 so i gotta fix er fast and get it broke in. Meybe the dyno will hold up long enough for that.ill check back when i get it running again. I dont want to have to get that pump rebuilt

if it misses on same cylinder you mite have a valve adjusted too tight or if its puffing white smoke you prob got a leakin head gasket on top of water problem...you mite try taking return line loose from top of tank and run it via a hose into a clear bottle to see if water is inside pump itself...i dont like dumpin 3 buck a gallon fuel either but its still cheaper than a new pump and injectors.

What all did you do to the injection system. If the tractor was stuck, it probably has an injection pump that has water in it. I cannot remember how our d17 d return line was hooked up, but I think that injection pump has a body filled with what ever was in the tank (supposed to be diesel), so that may be where the water is coming from. If the engine was stuck, I would take the pump off and have it tested out by an injection shop. Cheap insurance for such an investment. At least bleed the system out quite a bit (I would run about a cup of diesel through the injector lines combined). Also, does it smoke when it misses? Did you check the energy cells in the head when you rebuilt it? Good luck

Did you pull the injectors out and check them for clogging? also try draining all the old fuel that has water in it out of the tank even though it is crazy to do somethin like that with the high fuel prices and all but i think that would be a good idea along with drainin the sediment bowl. Just a thought to try to help.
