Hope you guys don't mind me straying over here, but I need some help. A family member has asked me to correct some problems with the pump on his Allis B, so I now have the pump laying on my bench here in southwest Iowa, the tractor is in northern Wisconsin, so I really can't run too many tests. The problem is that the pump lifts just fine, but then it will not hold. I have had the pump apart to certain degree, and other than a small amount of sludge I can't find anything wrong. The plungers/pistons work freely, all of the check balls appear bright and clean. Any ideas? Do I just give it a good flushing and take a chance?

look at the end of the thimble that rides on the control shaft. part of the relief vavle. the thimble is probably mashed on the end. needs ground and straightened.

I have rebuilt a few of them. Mater of fact I have one tore apart in the parts washer. I couldnt tell you anymore than has been suggested without having it in my hands. I can tell you that the parts seem a little salty. Here is a drawing if you do not have one at hand.

Hi Rusty,

It sounds to me that either of the two discharge check balls are leaking by or the relief valve ball is leaking by. I'd suspect the relief valve area since I've had probelems there - but it's harder to get at than the discharge checks. I sent you an email.

Rod, thank you. I got the e-mail. Let me dig into that relief valve, I've already had the discharge check balls out, and they both look good. I'll agree, the relief valve does look to be a bit more complicated to get into.

Rusty,

A while back I bought a B pump on ebay. It seemed to lift OK but would not hold. After some investigation I found that the ball in the relief valve was missing altogether! An earlier owner must have disassembled the pump and lost that ball. I was able to use a ball bearing (same size = 3/16" dia) and everything worked out fine. Hopefully your fix will be as easy.

Thank you for that info, I definately will check it out. I've got a few assorted sizes of those balls, hopefully I can find one that is at least close to the size needed, if that is the problem.

I'm guessing you don't have a manual for it do you. If not drop me an e-mail and I can send you a page or 2 from the I-T manual

I've got the IT manual, wouldn't have had a clue without it, but it doesn't have much of a trouble shooting section.

Sorry I can't help you then. I have never had any probelm with those pumps/controls so I have no clue as to what maybe wrong.
