I need to replace the rear seals on the diffrential on my 38 B, where they go into the final drives. I know I got to remove the fianl drives and stuff, its the seal right there or do i have to go into the trans. I think this would be a good time to the braks too. Thanks
Andrew

When you remove the axle housing the seal is right there before you. I have seen the bolts loose on the plate that retains the seal and carrier bearing so check them also while you are that far into it. The brake bands can be replaced with the housings installed, if the drums are bad the axle housing must of course be removed. I would pull the old bands first just so the housings are not moving around while knocking the pins out. Then if the drums are bad replace them while the housings are off then finish the brake job when the housings are back on the tractor.

There are two pins on top, usualy rusted in fairly tight but easy to knock loose. There are holes on the outside that the pins were intalled through. Sometimes there are holes on the inside end (towards the transmission)sometimes not, depends on the casting thickness. If you do not have the inside holes drill some, it is not hard to determain where the end of the in bore is. Spray some pen oil on the pins and remove the keepers. The trick to easy removal is to drive the pins IN a bit first. Easier because you can get a straight hit on the pin with a punch and hammer. Once moving inward you can easily drive them out from the inside holes. The bands are hinged at the bottom and you remove them out the top hole. Most of the time the hinges are rusted tight and they remove hard. Belive me it will be easier to pry and pull on them while the finals are atached to the tractor. I have had to cut them out in sections. Two tricks for instalation. The bands commonly availible are poorly formed. knocking them around a section of the correct size pipe will help the instalation. The second little known trick is once they are in and you start to adjust you need to realy stand on the pedals to help form the bands to the drums. Adjust, then stand on the pedals, adjust again etc until they quit giving. Correctly adjusted bands will have lots of travel. Make sure enugh that you can set the locks and they will stay in. Good luck.
