My WD 45 shifter in hung in first and second gear, it won't shift side to side, Is this bad oil (as I know it needs changed) causing the problem??

What generally happens is that the tip of the shifter wears down and then it comes out of the slot on the gear rail. This leaves the tractor still in that gear. Meantime you think you are okay and put it in another position. Knock the pin out holding the shifter in. Look down in the hole and line the slots up to neutral. If you replace the stick you will be okay if you shift slowly, but you will need to get a new stick or build up the end of that shifter.

It was working OK when I parked it last fall and it started right up but wouldn't shift into third, fourth and reverse, just don't make any sense to me why it would go bad sitting there.

Sure it makes sence, you have moisture laden lubricant in your trans and part of the moisture goes to the bottom as water, part of it stays in suspension and part of it evaporates and rusts everything not imursed in oil, like the shiftig rails and tower. It takes little rust on the rails to make them slide hard and even less in the detents to make it very hard for the balls to move out of the grooves. My guess to the sequence of your problems is that the tractor was left in 3rd or 4th. Rust partialy locked up that rail. It was tugged out of that gear and a worn ball on the end of the shifter allowed it to move away from the 3-4 rail before it was in the middle or nutruel detent. The shifter ball cant not move side to side if the rails are not in the middle detent. Changing oil now will not make it work. Remove the tower and move the 3-4 rail (middle one) so it is in line with the 1-2 and R rails. Spray some pen oil around in there and move the rails back and forth to free things up and replace the tower. Then get rid of water ladden oil and using the tractor will spash good oil up into the tower.
