WC Mag problem ???

Have a 35 WC that has been running. Started to miss on cylinders 2 & 3. Worked over carb, no change. Took plugs out to see if they got a spark. Nope. Put a set of old spark plugs in and now nothing at all even after reinstalling new plugs. Have new wires to.

1. How do you test a mag for good spark?
2. Found a F on the fly wheel but which cover do you line it up with? Top or bottom?
3. Have spent the better part of a day reading archives. Some say put roter just before timeing lug and some say right at timing lug. This is a hand start tractor.
4. I have tryed another Mag off a parts tractor, that looked to be in good condition, but nothing there either.

Any advise you can give would be great and sorry for the revisit to a topic that is discussed regularly.

Anyone around the Ogden Utah area that would be willing to lend a helping hand?

Thanks for your help guys.

We replaced the head gasket last winter. It ran good and gradually started to run poorly. Thats when we noticed that it wasnt fireing on the 2 & 3. We have the wire type plug wires. We removed #1 plug and tested it for spark and got one after 7 or 8 cranks of the handle. Took off the #2 and got nothing after 10 or 12 cranks and the same thing on the last two plugs. Now we cant get any spark on any plug. We have tryed to pull start it and it wont even try to start. I have 2 other mags and pit on of them on and it wont do anything either as far as I can tell. We have taken the valve cover off to see the valves to find TDC and I believe we have everything timed right. The first mag I was supprised it would work beacuse it had bad gaskets and had only half the screws in it. The second looks to have been rebuilt but the tractor came off a fence row. It appears to be timed right for the points and has a new cap on it, but I have never seen it run.

Thanks for your advise I will try some more things tonight.

Depending on what model mag you have, depends on the problem your having providing it's the mag. If your WC is equipped with a "J" series Fairbanks, (two piece lower cover & upper end cap) it could very well have the old style tar taped coil in it. These coils as age came upon them start to leak and ground themselves out on the inside of the mag housing shorting the spark it's producing usually dropping cylinders intermitantly like yours is doing. Later when Fairbanks realized the problem they were having, an upgraded epoxy style coil was incorporated into the "J" series mags which eliminated the problem. Unfortunetely, some 30,000 mags were built before the problem was corrected. We service and rebuild mags and are a Fairbanks dealer, and have replacement parts in stock if you find it's the coil causing the problem. An easy way to tell if you have the old style coil is lift the lower cover to reveal the coil and points. Another problem was the condenser. If your still having trouble, give us a call. I'm sure I would be able to help you out and get your tractor back in service again. Drop us a line if interested...

use an inline spark tester. they are pretty cheap and easy to use. just go to the auto parts store, and pick one up. it comes in handy A LOT.
don't have to take anything apart either.just hook it up between the plug wire and the plug once at a time and it lights up when it gets a decent spark. slowride>

You test spark on a mag the same as you do with a battery ignition system. What you do is take a good plug and one at a time you hook that plaug the each plug wire and turn the engine over or start the engine either way works and test each plug wire for spark. If you have it on one or 2 of them but not all four of them you either have the wrong type of wires on it or you have a bad rotor or cap. On mags you have to use true wire type plug wires not the car/truck type

Are you sure you have a mag problem? Have you pulled the plug wire from cylinders 2 and 3 and held the wire near the head, with the engine running, to see if there is spark at each wire. If so you may have a blown head gasket between cylinders 2 and 3. If you do not have fire at the plug wires I have seen cap develop "dead holes". Have you by chance inadvertently switced the plug wires on cylinders 2 and 3? One other question, Have you tried to add one of the aftermarket electronic replacments for points and condenser? If so this will cause the engine to miss on two cylinders. This has to do with the basic design of the unitized mags.
