I can"t get any spark. Is there any way to test the magneto? This is on a A/C B tractor

I sometimes test the magneto and spark plugs the same way. I clamp the magneto in a vice, place a plug wire with a spark plug attached into the magneto cap. I hold the base of the plug tight against the magneto base, then sap the the magneto over four times. I watch the plug for a spark on each snap. I try all four holes in the magneto cap and if I do not have a spark I try it all over again with another or fresh spark plug. If I do not find a spark I then check the points. After filing the points or changing the points I then snap the magneto over and watch the points for spark before reassembling the cap. After the cap is back in place I re check the same way as above. I have found bad caps. I have found bad plugs this way as well.

A few years back I had tested a magneto and found it to be working properly and the tractor would not start. The plugs were only a few months old. After the second magneto failed to start the tractor and both magnetos had been taken apart and new points and concencers had been installed I checked the plugs in the vice as discribed and found two that would not spark. I put in a new set of plugs and she started on the first turn.

Grab a spark plug wire that is connected to the magneto. Have someone turn over the engine. If you don't feel a spark do the same thing without the spark plug wire- use a screwdriver stuck into the magneto cap. If you don't feel a spark, check the magneto.

remove the distributor from the front of the mag and clean the points with points file. reinstall lining up the marked gears. then by cranking the engine over and holding the sparkplug wire about 1/4" away from the block you should see a spark. Bob
