WD45 Just won't run

After 3 summers of work, my WD45 is ready to run. So last night after the milking, my dad and I pulled it out of the shed. Because my 6 volt battery charger suddenly doesn't seem to work, I can't turn the engine over fast enough. So last night we tried to drift it down a hill, and all we got was a few backfires and flooded cylinders. So I let it sit overnight, and today I adjusted the carb float. That solved the flooding problem, so we tried to start it again. I pulled the plugs and cleaned them off. Tonight we decided to pull it behind the 6060 down the road. This time it backfired the whole time we pulled it. So we checked the point gap and it was set at .020, and the plug wires were all in place. So we tried it again. All it would do was shoot flames out of the muffler. As I increased the throttle, the backfiring became more violent, and farther apart. When I cut the throttle, the backfiring became more mild and more rapid. The carb is rebuilt and seems to be working, the points, condenser, and coil are all brand new. We decided it might a timing problem, but I really don't know because I never tore into the distributer. What is the problem.

Aex Let us know what you found wrong with that 45 if it is running now. If not check the cam timing.

I would bring no 1 up on firing stroke to tdc and then pull the cap and see what plug wire the bug is pointing to and go from there.

I agree with the other guys you have it 180 out or one nipple off on all of them. I had that type of problem with a C and all I did was move all the wires over one place and it purrs like a kitten now.

sounds like your wires are 180* off on distributor cap...real simple fix...move wires to terminal opposite the one theyre on now...ex; left to right and top to bottom
also make sure you have the rotation correct on cap.

Did you have all plug wires off at one time, if so it sounds like it is 180* out of time. Good luck

Hi,

I had a Case DC that did that exact same behavior and it turned out to be a bad condensor...check the timing, though.

Sounds like a timing problem alright.
Flames out the exhaust are a good indicator.

When you put the distributor back in, did you get it off 1 rev of the engine ? That would get the distributor off 180deg

Firing order correct ?

Another thing that can affect starting....valve clearances pre-adjusted correctly?
