Hydraulic Pump or Torque?

We have an Allis 190 gas. Does anyone know a way to test whether they Hydraulic Pump or Torque is bad before buying new parts (only to find out that wasn't it!)? My husband says that one or the other is bad, but there is no way that he knows of to test the hydraulic pump.

I would like to get him what he needs to start restoring this tractor, but he's not sure which one is broken!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Checking at the remotes will not give the full story. It will tell if the pump is working at all.
Does the steering work? The steering and the power director are on the same circuit. if it it the 2 section pump, there is a priotity flow divider on the back of the pump that may be sticking.
I would suggest getting a service manual. Either the factory or the IT manuals have the test procedure.

Andrea - I have a 180 gas which is very similar to your 190 gas so far as they share the same basic engine block and torque tube. When you say torque I assume you mean the hydraulically activated Power Director clutch. I also assume that the tractor will start but won't move no matter if the Power Director is in high or low. Finally I assume you've checked the hydraulic fluid level and it's full. Given those assumptions, you can test if the hydrualic pump for basic pressure at one of the remote ram outlets. Go to a tractor/farm store and pick up a male Pioneer hydraulic plug (or whatever type coupler is on it), a 5000 lb hydraulic pressure gauge and whatever fitting you need to have the pressure gauge mount to the male Pioneer plug. Once you make that up, plug the gauge into one of the remotes and move the lever and check the pressure readings. Should be in the general neighborhood of 2000-2200 lbs I should think. Go ahead and check both the up and down side of both remotes. If you get something substantially lower or nothing, then most likely I'd start at the pump. If you get good pressure readings, you are more likely to have issues with the hydrualic valves, etc. inside your torque tube that acutate your Power director clutches. Good luck! Mike
