Me and Distributors have never gotten along. My CA has a dist and I suspect its the root to my rough running engine and back-fires... and if I disconnect my batt the motor dies. My parts C has a very nice mag that has great spark. Can I simply swap them? Or am I better off warming up to that dastardly distributor?

Thanks for the encouragement. I stopped off at Napa and they indeed had all the parts I needed. Wowah, it now runs like a Swiss watch.
Dang, might have to reduce my loyalty to those mags... but they look so much nicer.

The distributor is just one component in a battery and coil ignition system. If you don't have a functional charging system, or if the tractor is wired such that voltage from the charging system cannot reach the coil without the battery included in the curcuit then the engine should shut down.
Why is it important that the engine run with the battery disconnected?
The biggest reason distributors replaced magneto ignitions is cause they make a much hotter spark at cranking speed. The mag's spark wins out at higher rpm but I doubt yore tractor will ever see 2500 revs and that's where the magneto really gains it's advantage.

Mags and distubutors both have there good and bad points. Yes that mag would work on your tractor. And also you don't need the battery for a mag, but mag parts can be harder to come by. Also disconnecting your battery and haveing it die has nothing to do with the distubutor. You have another problem also since your chargeing system isn''t wrking as it should if doing that and the engine dies. Distubutros are very simple and mags on the other hand can be harder to fix once they do stop working. Both have points, condenser and coils so either way you go you have to deal with those parts.

try to get the distributor right. Check wiring pattern, wires, check valve lash also- too tight can be cause of backfires. Compression check another thing to do- possible burnt/leaky valve. If you take off mag you disable a tractor and may not fix the other one. Points gap check also. RN
