i have a 170 diesel that does not have the power i think it should it smokes a little more than i like and today grinding feed it looked like it might be leaking a little oil at the head gasket it seems to run fine but has a little noise in the exhaust and it seem like it is sucking a lot of air through the intake

Also, not to make you sound stupid, but...smoke, low power, the extra exhaust noise and the sucking in the intake might be signs that the air filter is severly plugged. Checking that is free and new ones are cheaper than an OH. If that is ok, then I'd go w/Texas Denny's route.

How many hours are on the tractor? Could be it is ready for an overhaul. If oil is coming out around the head, you probably need a head gasket. While you've got the head off for the gasket, may as well grind or lap the valves.
