I have a 42 WC with the D17 Gleanor engine basically stock. I pulled last year in farm stock 4000 lb and finished third in points
I seem to have a problem of going too fast since we are limited to 3.5 mph and I usually blow the horn every pull
I am wondering if it is possible to find a lower gear for the rear end I run 14.9 x 28 tires and weigh in at 3250 with me on the tractor
I wanted to run taller tires for super farm next year but I"m told that would make things worse
I was told I would have to bore and stroke the engine to get more pulling power without the rpms

Thanks for any advice

slosmoke ; i don"t know for sure i am assuming it"s the combine i have noticed the adjustment
screw is backed way out i think this is why it revs so high
what is the proper way to set this up
one guy told me something about setting the governor so the throttle rod just slips in or something but i wasn"t sure he knew what he was talking about
thanks for all the info from all of you

i plan on getting some help from a local ac guru this next week

Does the engine have the tractor govenor, or the combine setup?

what is the proper wat to adjust the governor
i"ve had so many different suggestions that i don"t know which is right my tractor never stalls in any gear it just seems to run way too fast i can turn over 2000 rpms with no trouble but when the load hits it just loses power

The governor should start to grab. When you have your tractor at idle, let out on the clutch in third gear and push the brakes softly. The RPM's will drop a little to a bog then back to where you were. Your governor may act a little differnt my other tractor the MM will not bog down the governor act right away you have to watch the linkage move because it happens so fast. You may need two people to watch you governor because it happens so quickly. The governor rod should move when you hold the brakes at a little above idle when you let out on the clutch in a high gear real slow. Your governor can be working right now with what you said. My WC with the almost same engine as yours will never stall leting out on the clutch in any gear. It just takes off like yours. My tractor will get in trouble in the 4000 -4500 on a good track.

i don't think the chain is that long i use 1st gearand i'm not sure the governor is working right
i'm beginning to think my problem may be in the governor or throttle linkage

If the governor is right you should not be able to kill the engine in first gear i don't think. When you let out the clutch the governor should imediatly sense the load and open the throttle. You should hear the engine working hard and trying if it is a big load in a higher gear. It shouldn't just sort of lose rpm and stall out. ACs are known for snappy fast acting governors.

Would that be second gear you are using? If you have more power than my WD and are in the 4000LBS class maybe. I use second in the 3500 lbs. class here, 5-6 ft chain and have just enough power with my stock (just the 1/8" overbore kit). They don't have a speed limit here. Point is if you are using second, why not use first? If you are in first, which I don't think, too slow, you would have enoght power to pull at 1/2 throttle probably, and be pleanty slow? I would be interested to hear more of what you are doing and the length of the chain.

You can try to find an RC rear end. Same housing, lower ratios. Good luck as they are rare. You can try to find a Sherman underdrive. Also good luck as they are very rare. Might have to play with your rpm's through the throttle untill you get enough load that you can run wide open and not break the limit.

I might be missing something here. Isn't that the reason for a govenor?

Guess I didn't splain myself quite right. I was trying to say that he can run less than rated RPM's, half throttle or something like that. When he gets enough of a load that running full throttle would be under 3.5 mph, he can open it up. Seen this done at a lot of antique speed limit pulls.

Thanks. I just figured the govenor could be set up to do that automatically. If the engine came from a combine, it should have one.
