Converting a WC from very broken mag to a distributor. I am have trouble getting a spark. I am was sure I had the disributor set corretly. But, since I seem to get no spark can someone tell me the way to set the distibutor so the points are open .020 at the correct time.

Thanks all.

Turns out the new coil was bad. Never got anything out of the high voltage side. Replaced the coil and we now have a spark.

First, you set the points to .020" when on the "high point" of one of the lobes while NOT watching the timing.

Then you position the distributor so the points JUST "break" at TDC, or whatever the timing "spec" is for the tractor you're working with.

If you have a test light, take the PRIMARY wire off of the distributor, and connect the light in series, between the wire you removed and the distributor.

With the ignition "ON", crank the engine slowly in the direction of normal rotation, towards #1 TDC. The test light will be lit, 'cause the points are closed. At the exact point the light goes out because the points have just begun to open, stop turning the engine over, and look at the timing marks to see where the "spark" has just occured, then make any timing adjustments needed by turning the distributor a but earlier or later.
