WELL IJUSTWANTED A PART NUMBER
I KNOW ALL ABOUT SPARK PLUG HEAT RANGES I"VE BEEN A MECHANIC FOR 42 YEARS WORKING ON CARS TRACTORS ARE JUST A LITTLE DIFFERENT
I WAS TAKING ADVICE FROM A MAN WHO HAS MORE TROPHIES AND POINTS CHAMPIONSHIPS IN ANTIQUE PULLING THAN ALL THE BOOKS WRITTEN ABOUT THE TRAVEL OF THE SPARK COMMON SENSE WOULD TELL ME THAT IF THE SPARK IS CLOSER TO THE COMBUSTIBLE MIXTURE THEN IT MIGHT IGNITE A LITTLE FASTER
I GUESS I JUST DIDN"T EXPECT SOME BODY TO GET ALL TECHNICAL THANKS ANY WAY

he did't say it would increase hp just that the champion j8c 's i'm running are not as long of reach as the autolites
the way i understand it the autolites would put the spark closer to the piston for better fuel burn thus better performance

Unfortunately, he is still wrong. Once the spark is there, the combustion is almost instantaneous as the fire travels very, very fast. Where is starts is not of much impact. Hotter plugs are for worn out engines. If you use them in a good engine, the electrodes will burn more rapidly resulting in shorter plug life.

There are lots of books on this subject written by university professors. A good one is written by A R Rogowski from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Elements of Internal Combustion Engines.

Or, you can do the experiment yourself. Go to the local auto parts store with your plug (or plug number). Tell him you want a plug that is two ranges hotter. NAPA or Parts Connection (usually but not always) are better stores for this kind of purchase. Auto Zone people can only look up numbers in a book.

I believe your friend misinformed you. Going to a hotter plug will not improve horsepower on a good engine. It might help with starting if your engine is worn and burns some oil. It might help reduce plug fouling from oil consumption. But the plug will not improve horsepower if your engine is in good condition.
